Porsche Adventures from the Land of Ice and Fire

In the summer of 2009, I actively searched the classifieds in the US for a good Porsche 993 4S — as I thought it was the most beautiful car in the world. But at $25,000 they were too expensive for me to import to Iceland — looking at the price now, it was darn cheap! One evening I went to the cinema with a friend and afterwards we went for some ice cream. My friend had just bought a two-door 3-series BMW and wanted to show me the cars he hadn't bought. So we drove to the used car dealers! There were three, and the last one was at Bilasala Reykjavikur. When we got there, one car stood out to me — a gem in a sea of ordinary cars, a 2003 arctic silver Porsche 996 Carrera 4S. I had never seen one in Iceland before and was pretty sure this was the only one!

And it was! It seemed to be in great shape, and after walking around it, I stopped at the windscreen and looked at the VIN: the last four numbers were 2721. The same last four as my mobile phone number! That was a pretty amazing sign — it literally had my name on it! The next day, the sales manager made me an offer I couldn't refuse, and the rest is history. This was my first Porsche — although I've been close to buying one a few times — but this was the first and it's still just as much fun 14 years later! So much, that I now have three more: a 1986 944 Turbo, a 1988 928 S4 and my favourite Porsche, a 1997 993 C2 — the last of the air-cooled! And each has its own story. Now I have to find a nice 914, but I guess I am too late for that train!

Soon after buying the C4S, I joined the Porsche Club Iceland, where I serve as Vice President. This small Club was founded in 2006 by Petur Lentz and consists of a 356, many 911s, a GT4, a few GT3 RSs, a GT2 RS and a great bunch of Porsche brothers and sisters who share a passion for Porsche! Ever since, my Porsche adventures have taken me as far west as Luftgekühlt in Long Beach, California, as far north and east as the Icelakes in Levi, Finland, and as far south as the Porsche Identity 991 reveal in Cape Town, South Africa. Plus two Porsche parades in Europe and one in the USA. I helped with the Driven To America Porsche Show on Long Island — I've driven through the Alps in air-cooled 911s with Stefan Bogner and Curves Magazine every year since 2014 — I was interviewed by 911 Magazine and took part in the making of episode 4 here in Iceland. I later found out that the interview was broadcast on Porsche TV on all the screens in Porsche dealerships around the world! How cool is that!

There is no end to the generosity of Porsche owners who have given me the opportunity to drive their proud possessions — and this is a great list: 356 Coupe, 356 Cabriolet, 356 Speedster, 356 Carrera four-cam, Junior Diesel 111, early 911 1966 and 1968, 911 2.7 RS 1973 and 1974, 914 1.8, 924 Turbo, 944 S2, 944 Turbo, 911 SC, 930 Turbo, 911 G-programm Coupe and Targa, 964 Carrera 4, 964 Carrera 4 wide body with supercharger, 964 Carrera RS, 964 Turbo 3.6, 993 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, 993 RS 3.8, 996 Turbo S, 996 GT3, 996 GT3 RS, 997 Carrera 4, 997 Carrera S, 997 Turbo, 997 GT3, 997 GT3 RS, 997 GT3 RS 4.0, 997 GT2 RS, Cayman S, 991 Carrera, 991 Carrera S, 991 Carrera 4S, 991 Carrera GTS, 991 Turbo, 991 Turbo S, 991 GT3, 991 GT3 RS, Panamera 4S, Panamera Turbo, Cheyenne Turbo S, Macan Turbo, Taycan Cross Tourismo 4S, Taycan Turbo, Taycan Turbo S and a Carrera GT. Of all of them, the Carrera GT is the absolute favourite and of the 911s, the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 is at the top of the list! Riding shotgun in a $5.2 million 1960 718 RS60 NR 136 race car, a 1970 911 ST, a 993 Cup (Jerry Seinfeld's), a 959, a 987 Boxster Spyder prototype, a 997 GT2 RS prototype, a 991 R, a 992 GT3, a Panamera Turbo S Hybrid Sport Turismo prototype and a 918 Spyder prototype driven to the limit on Alpine roads — I have a lot to be thankful for!

The Carrera 4S has served me well, great driving adventures all over Iceland and I have taken it across the Atlantic to Europe — I made the pilgrimage back to the factory in Stuttgart and drove 285 km/h on the Autobahn and on two occasions for the Porsche Parade Europe in Austria and France, both times with members of the Porsche Club Iceland, drove on the Porsche Leipzig track and subsequently travelled with my wife for a romantic trip through France, Belgium and the Netherlands! — Every Wednesday during the summer, the Carrera 4S is unleashed on the KK Racetrack for track day rides and has served as the safety car for all the F1000 races here in Iceland for the last three years. A fulfilling life for a Porsche enthusiast.

I have been fortunate to meet like-minded Porsche people all over the world who have become lifelong friends, and I have welcomed many of them, when they visited my home country Iceland.

Happy anniversary Porsche Clubs worldwide — looking forward to many more Porsche adventures.
